Review by Rafael "Parker!!" Jovine ★★★½ 7
Even though Pacino's career hasn't been the same for a while now, sometimes I like the directions and roles he chooses for himself. My point is, even after his performance in Jack and Jill, I didn't expect to see him singing and be good at it.
To my surprise, this movie is very entertaining and sweet. Both the music and the script seem to fall a lot into the sappy and even melodramatic category, even Jennifer Garner seems to be playing a role she is already very familiar with, and to no one's surprise she does a good job, as does Bobby. Pacino also manages to stand out proving to have a more fragile and quiet side, but Collins' own…

Very, very sweet, heartfelt film about flawed but good people. It’s funny that this is probably one of Pacino’s recent most down to earth, deeply human performances, considering that he plays a larger than life celebrity.
Everyone in the cast is so good but Pacino/Cannavale scenes are simply sublime (what a beautiful ending!).

Gotta say, if John Lennon wrote me a fan letter, I too would have it framed and then blow rails off it.

I've been sitting here in some kinda post-Danny Collins stupor, looping Al Pacino's [all too brief] rendition of "Hey, Baby Doll" WELL into the double digits and, at this point, I'm starting to think I'm no better than the red-vine sucking senility that sent him['s character] spiralling in the first place... Like, I wanted this fictional Dunk to find fulfillment in his art, reconcile familial fractures but also... with hits like these!? "Pigeon" meet "Hole", more Baby Doll! (To be read as: "Baby Dole")

After being blown away by Life Itself from filmmaker Dan Fogelman, I decided to check out his other feature.
Al Pacino plays an aging singer. He can't really sing, but he has loads of charisma. Kind of like Bob Dylan (who I love), although his pop hit "Baby Doll" kind of channels "Sweet Caroline". He has a young girlfriend, estranged son (Bobby Cannavale), and love interest (Annette Bening). He plays the ultimate jerk with a heart of gold.
I enjoyed the feature, but I can't say that it stood out as much as I hoped. However, I found that this was based on a true story: John Lennon wrote Steve Tilston a letter telling him how much he admired his music. I downloaded a Tilston song after watching this ("I Really Wanted You"). Thank you, Freegal.
And guess what? Fogelman also has a TV series called This Is Us, so I'm knee deep in Season One right now.

Do you know what I like about you? You never give up.
-Mary SinclairThank you Dan Fogelman for bringing Al Pacino back to the silver screen in something watchable. Admittedly the writer of The Guilt Trip and Last Vegas brings us more contrived schmaltz, but this schmaltz has a few genuine moments mixed in with the fabricated ones.
The most important thing though is that Pacino is fun again and seems to have great chemistry with everyone in the film especially Annette Bening and Christopher Plummer. Casting Pacino in the role of an aging rock star that has been coasting on name recognition since he hasn't produced anything of any artistic merit in decades is of course perfect, but…

Many reasons to watch this one:
Christopher Plummer being brutally honest and delivering a piano.
Jennifer Garner saying "oh, fuck me," as she opens the door.
Bobby Cannavale and the anger he has beneath the surface (and the way his voice almost breaks when he talks about the Mets).
Annette Benning and pretty much everything she does here.
And Al Pacino, delivering a performance that never seems to strike a wrong note.
Also, the final scene. Goddamned father/son moments always win me over.

Review by Connor Carey ★★★ 2
Danny Collins undeniably has its predictable and cliched moments but its still an enjoyable and heartfelt film with a great lead performance from Al Pacino. Ill admit that a lot of the humorous moments fell flat for me and the second half of the film wasn't as engaging or entertaining as the first half was, but the chemistry between Al Pacino and Anette Bening along with a perfect final scene make up for most of its flaws.

It's amazing how an all John Lennon soundtrack can elevate a film.
Al Pacino is a god damn rockstar. I know this isn't based on Neil Diamonds life but it's funnier if you watch it like that.
