Publix Chocolate Ganache Supreme Cake Review – Snarkle-Sauce on Wry (2024)

Publix Chocolate Ganache Supreme Cake Review – Snarkle-Sauce on Wry (1)

A bicycle built for two. Or one.

It’s my birthday, and someone at work brought me this little box of twin single-serve cake slices from the Publix Bakery. I ended up eating both slices. It’s my birthday, so you can’t judge me. I’m the rubber, and you’re the glue.

Publix also makes a full-size version of this Chocolate Ganache Supreme Cake, but my co-workers know better than to bring me an entire cake.

Anyway. What makes this dessert “Supreme”? Welp, it features two layers of moist chocolate cake and two layers of fluffy cocoa cream-stuff, plus a coating of fudgy chocolate ganache. AND some fancy buttercream. AND dark chocolate decorations. So, five different chocolate tastes in one cake.

Despite all that chocolate, it’s a much lighter cake than I expected — none of the layers are dense or overly rich. The actual cake is “nice” for a supermarket cake. It’s soft, but has a satisfying structural crumb. The cocoa taste is pleasantly dark, without being sickeningly sweet. Not a cake I’d rave about, but way better than it could be.

Arguably, the chocolate ganache coating is the best part of the cake. It’s surprisingly decadent and flavorful. It’s the kind of dark chocolate that tastes slightly tangy, which I enjoyed. Enhancing the silky texture is a smooth, buttery flavor — with just enough saltiness to round out the profile.

A grid of dark chocolate buttercream decorations sit atop the cake, mimicking gift ribbon. The buttercream absolutely exceeded my expectations — it’s luscious and deeply flavored without tasting too sugary. It has a delicate texture — finely whipped and smooth. It melts instantly on the tongue.

Aesthetically, this is a “fancy” dessert. There are special filigree chocolate garnishes that form a bougie-bow on top of each slice. I like that the garnish chocolate is not waxy or gross, but actually tastes like reasonably decent chocolate. A garnish meant to be eaten, instead of discarded. Yay.

Honestly, I’m not sure what is in the cream layers of this cake. “Fancy cream stuff.” It’s my least favorite part. It doesn’t taste great by itself — just fake whipped topping with a veneer of sophistication. Like a door-to-door salesman, all dressed up, but a little bit desperate.

HOWEVER, when eaten in a mouthful with the cake and ganache, the “cream-stuff” tastes pleasant. I do like how light it is, and it doesn’t seem to melt or fall apart, even after sitting in the refrigerator for days. It’s probably going to stick to my thighs and belly without melting, too.

Admittedly, these cake portions are not impressive-looking inside the plastic clamshell box. But they blossom gloriously when plated. The packaging has two pieces of paper wrapping that protect the slices from sticking together and getting mushed. I was able to lift out each slice individually for serving.

Each serving is a scant 4 inches in length, and only 3 ounces. These are perfect for a home date-night for a couple. But also perfect for a single person like me who has a totally legitimate reason to eat cake two days in a row.

Ingredients and Price

The two slices cost $5.29, which is $2.65 each. There’s 6 ounces of dessert total, so not a particularly stellar deal per ounce. However, the fancy decorations and appearance might justify it, for the right occasion.

Here they are again, in case you hate reading ALL CAPS as much as I do:

Sugar, Water, Heavy Cream (Cream, Milk, Carrageenan, Mono-Diglycerides, Polysorbate 80), Bleached Enriched Flour (Wheat flour, Malted Barley Flour, Niacin, Reduced iron, Thiamine, Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic acid), Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (Palm, Palm kernel, Coconut And/Or Cottonseed), Eggs, Chocolate Liquor, Corn Syrup, Soybean Oil, Cocoa Processed With Alkali, Nonfat Milk, Ariel Decor (Sugar, Chocolate Liquor, Cocoa butter, Soy Lecithin, Natural Vanilla), Egg white, Vegetable Oil (Palm, Canola), Dextrose, Natural Flavor, Sodium Casinate, Polysorbate 60, Carbohydrate Gum, Salt, Soy Lecithin, Leavening (Potassium Bicarbonate, Sodium acid Pyrophosphate, Monocalcium Phosphate), Food Starch-Modified, Fructose, Whey, Mono &-Diglycerides, Sweetened Condensed Milk (Milk sugar), Polyglycerol Esters Of Fatty Acids, Potassium Sorbate (Preservative), Phosphoric acid, Cocoa Butter, Butter (Cream, Natural flavor), Sodium Citrate, Citric Acid, Gums (Xanthan, Cellulose, Guar), Cream Powder (Pasteurized Sweet Cream, Skim Milk Solids, Sodium caseinate), Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate, Corn syrup (Corn Syrup, Salt, Vanilla Extract {Vanilla Beans, Water, Ethyl Alcohol}), Disodium phosphate, Natural And Artificial Flavor, Beta Carotene (Color), Phosphoric Acid, Rapeseed Lecithin, Unsweetened Chocolate, Vanillin (Artificial Flavor), Cinnamon, Spice, Cornstarch.

This is a pretty disappointing ingredient list, TBH. Too many unhealthy additives and weird stuff. Come on, Publix!

Dramatic Conclusion

For the right occasion, I’d buy this again. Or, more accurately, I’d eat it again if someone gives it to me. No pressure.
