Is Knocked Up realistic? ›

In lesser hands, Knocked Up could have devolved into a clichéd odd-couple farce. But with Apatow at the helm it becomes a genuine, realistic depiction of how two very different people learn to be a couple for the sake of their unborn child.

This Is 40, a spin-off of Knocked Up, focuses on Pete and Debbie exploring the challenges of turning 40 years old amidst their complex lives. Despite Knocked Up being a critically acclaimed hit, This Is 40 was not as successful and ignored the main characters of Ben and Alison.

Debbie is both furious and impressed that Ben took charge of the situation and begins to change her formerly negative opinion about him. The couple welcomes the birth of a baby girl (a boy in the alternative ending) and settle down happily together in a new apartment in Los Angeles.

'Knocked Up' begins with more cringe than enjoyment, but belatedly turns into something worth watching. The story is comical and silly for the most part, but gets serious here and there and ends up holding a positive message. The cast list is absolutely stacked, there are many familiar names.

4 A Lot Of The Guys' Dialogue In Knocked Up Was Improvised

The dynamic between Ben and his close-knit group of friends, portrayed by Jason Segel, Jay Baruchel, Martin Starr, and Jonah Hill, showcases this approach vividly.

Here we see a 24 year old Seth Rogen, a 23 year old Jonah Hill, and a 39 year old Judd Apatow. Rogen has mentioned that Knocked Up, Superbad, and Pineapple Express were all filmed in the span of one year.

Jennifer Love Hewitt and Kate Bosworth auditioned for the part after Hathaway dropped out, but ended up losing out to Katherine Heigl. Christina Aguilera was a contender for the main role but decided to turn it down because she was promoting her album Back to Basics at the time.

Anne Hathaway was originally cast in the role of Alison in the film, but dropped out due to creative reasons that Apatow attributed to Hathaway's disagreement with plans to use real footage of a woman giving birth.
